Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye has become a part of our lives as missionaries. When we left for the field in 2000, we said our goodbyes to family and friends. What we didn't expect, though, is how often we would be saying goodbye to people as they leave Guatemala. This morning we said yet another tearful goodbye to our good friends the Ellers. Kory and Laura Eller, along with their children Katie (11), Ben (8), and JoshE (6) left for the States for a year long furlough. From their they will be in Spain for the Fall of 2006. We will not see them again until January of 2007. As we hugged their kids, I thought of how much they will change in this year and a half. Driving home, Kayla asked, "Mommy, when is JoshE coming back?" "In a year and a half," I told her. "How long is that?" she asked. "Well, Kayla, you'll be seven before he comes home." I turned back to see the tears streaming down her face. When you live overseas friends become like a second family. The Ellers have been that to us: the kids like cousins, their parents like aunt and uncle to our girls, and to Kyle and I, great friends. They will be missed.

Hey -- that was sweet. I'm sorry it was such a hard day yesterday. Saying goodbye IS a very hard thing.
On this end, we were received in an overhwhelming way. My folks and Todd were there, and it was awesome. We came to the house (unbelievable), and the Sunday School class that has "adopted" us had showered us with gifts, and gift cards, and games and videos, etc. Today we just unpacked, visited the school (Ben is really excited!), and hung out. The kids are excited about the Nintendo, the HUGE yard, the neighbors (we already met Susie, the mom, and her three kids, Oscar, Louie and Addie), and being with cousins. Its been a great day, exhausting...we slept until 9 a.m. this morning!!! But we need a few more days of it. We went to Target just to get a couple of cleaning supplies, garbage bags, soap, etc....and $100 later (thank goodness for those gift cards!!!!). Yikes. We got our car today, and a set of bunk beds, which I think will become Kory and my bed (who needs to sleep together on furlough anyway?!).
Ben's coolest moment today was the discovery of the mailbox. I had run out with my mom, and as I pulled back in, he said, "LOOK MOM! Its a MAILBOX!!! And there's MAIL in it!!" What amazing things. They're loving carpeting and the 3 season porch and Ben says there's lots more to see then in Guatemala (huh?!).
Anwyay, we love you guys. We miss you already.
Laura
