Monosyllables

A stone
in the road,
hit by a car,

thrown
to the lake
with a bounce –

then drops
and rolls
past the shore

to the sight
of the trout,
which swims

to the stone,
to the sight
of the hawk

up in the air,
who comes
to the fish

with a grab
and a pull –
as wings flap

a red tail
and scales
are lit by the sun

as a man
and his love
park their car

by a tree –
where the young
hawks wait –

then the man
takes a stone
to ask for a bride

and he hears
the words “yes,
I will!”
