WHAT'S
IN A NAME:
"Devan"
evolved from a combination between "Detlev" - great
grandfather and uncle's name and "Jordaan" - Minnemie's
maiden name. It was quite a challenge to come up with a boy
name... we wanted an Afrikaans family name, but most of our
boy names are so hard to pronounce in English that we had
to let the creative juices flow a little. Scott was the one
that came up with "Devan" after we studied and pondered
17 pages of Minnemie's family genealogy.
SCOTT'SCOMMENT:
"He's so
cute."
MinnemieSs
COMMENT:
Ek
kan nie glo dat mens so gou vir iemand kan lief wees nie.
(Afrikaans)
"I think I'm falling in love..."
(English)
WHAT
WE THINK STARTED THE LABOR:
Our Sunday School class played
ultimate Frisbee on Sunday May 4 - the actual due date - so
Minnemie decided to join in the fun and chase after the flying
disc. What a comical sight
a 9-month big belly hopping
along the field! But it seemed to have produced the desired
results! A little more than 24 hours later, labor started.
(Really
we know it was ultimately just God's timing - which is always
perfect.)
OUPA
GERRIT'S
(Minnemie's father):
"My
hart is so groot my borkas pyn sommer."
"My heart is so big my chest
can hardly contain it!"
OUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF OUR BABY:
Our first glimpse of our baby
was a head full of hair! Shortly after that we were assured
that there was nothing wrong with his lungs... he cried with
passion for the first 45 minutes of his life. (It
was in Grandpa Murphy's arms that he finally settled down.
You can imagine the credit that Grandpa took - and still takes
- for that.)
DIDI'S
COMMENT (Grandma
Murphy):
"Did you see his dimples?!
Did you see his dimples?!"
WHO
DO PEOPLE SAY HE LOOKS LIKE: Scott's
cute nose (and double chin), Minnemie's lips, Jordaan eyes
(dark brown), Grandpa Murphy's chin dimple, Oupa Gerrit and
Uncle Karel's cheek dimples and a frown of his own. He is
already the king of pulling faces! When he does that he reminds
Minnemie of all 3 her brothers...
OUMA
MOEKSIE(Minnemie's
mother):
"Ek
is so trots op jou. Ek kan nie wag om hom vas te hou nie!"
"I'm so proud of you. I can't wait
to hold him!"
GRANPA
MURPHY:
(The
look on his face said it all.)
LOFFIE
(Minnemie's brother) SAID:
"Hy's
'n lelike ou dingetjie!"
"He's an ugly little thing!"
(said
in brotherly, love of course... but
then again, that is Loffie's humble opinion of all day-old
babies)
OUR
PRAYER AND OUR PRAISE:
"Praise God from whom all blessings flow! He has once
more embraced us with love and grace."
1
SAMUEL 1:27-28:
"[We]
prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted [us] what
we asked of Him. So now [we] give him to the Lord. For his
whole life he will be given over to the Lord."
